Rhino Reserve 180-Gram Mono LP Cut From The Original Analog Tapes

This is the Rhino Reserve edition of Blues & Roots. Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab cut the lacquers from the original analog mono master tapes, and Fidelity Record Pressing pressed the 180-gram disc at its plant in Oxnard, California. It carries the album in its original mono mix under catalog number RES1 1305. Rhino issued it on January 9, 2026, as part of its Start Your Ear Off Right series for that year.

Mingus recorded the album in a single session at Atlantic Studios in New York on February 4, 1959. Nesuhi Ertegun produced, Tom Dowd engineered, and Atlantic released it in 1960 as its third Mingus album. The cover still carries the original mono catalog number, Atlantic 1305. The record began with Ertegun's suggestion that Mingus make a blues album. In the original liner notes Mingus wrote that he was "born swinging and clapped my hands in church as a little boy."

The band is a nine-piece built on horns: John Handy and Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, Booker Ervin on tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, and Jimmy Knepper and Willie Dennis on trombone. Mingus plays bass with Dannie Richmond on drums. Horace Parlan plays piano on five tracks, and Mal Waldron takes over on "E's Flat Ah's Flat Too", a piece also known as "Hora Decubitus". That tune, "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting" and "Moanin'" all first appeared on this record.
