1974 Jamaica pressing, Island Records ILPS 9281

This is a Jamaican pressing of Natty Dread on the Island and Tuff Gong labels, catalog number ILPS 9281. The typeface and the -U suffix stamped in its runouts point to lacquers mastered by EMI in the UK, and unlike a closely related Jamaican issue it carries no Sterling stamp.

The object

One LP with textured Tuff Gong labels and a deep inner groove. The stamped runouts read ILPS 9281 A-5U 2 on side A and ILPS 9281 B-4U 2 on side B.

Context

Island Records and Tuff Gong released Natty Dread on October 25, 1974, the first album Marley made after Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left the group and the first with the I Threes on backing vocals. It was recorded at Harry J Studios in Kingston with Sylvan Morris engineering, with further recording at Island Studios in London and mixing at Basing Street.
