A 2026 reissue of Desire on one black LP, catalog number 19802974651, with the album's nine songs split five and four across its two sides.

Desire was released on January 5, 1976 on Columbia, produced by Don DeVito and recorded across sessions in July, August and October 1975. Jacques Levy co-wrote seven of the nine songs; Dylan wrote "One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below)" and "Sara" alone.

Scarlet Rivera plays violin on the record. Dylan saw her carrying her instrument through Greenwich Village in late June 1975 and invited her to his rehearsal studio, where she spent the afternoon playing along with the new songs. Emmylou Harris sang at the July 30 session, which was her last; she had commitments to her own career.

The opening track takes up the case of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, convicted of a 1966 triple murder; the conviction was overturned in 1985. Dylan wrote the song after reading Carter's autobiography, The Sixteenth Round. The version on the album was recut in October 1975 after Columbia's lawyers raised libel concerns, with Ronee Blakley singing harmony. His liner notes close on the subject: "When Rubin gets out of jail, we celebrate in the historical parking lot in sunburned California..."

Desire spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 and reached number three in the United Kingdom.
