Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This LP belongs to Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Series, the label's run of 180-gram reissues in standard packaging. Blue Note's own notes for this edition describe an all-analog cut: Kevin Gray mastered it from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio, and it was pressed at Optimal in Germany. The jacket reproduces the stereo issue, catalog number 84029, and the disc carries a blue-and-white stereo label.

The record keeps the original six-track program across two sides. The alternate take of "It's Only A Paper Moon" that turns up on CD editions belongs to the digital era and is not part of this configuration.

The Big Beat was recorded on March 6, 1960, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Alfred Lion producing and Rudy Van Gelder engineering, and was issued by Blue Note that year as BLP 4029 in mono and BST 84029 in stereo. Blakey led a quintet of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass. Blue Note notes that Shorter was the newest member of the band at the time.

Shorter wrote half the program: "The Chess Players," "Sakeena's Vision," named for Blakey's young daughter, and "Lester Left Town," a dedication to the tenor saxophonist Lester Young. Bill Hardman wrote "Politely," and the set closes on the Arlen, Harburg and Rose standard "It's Only A Paper Moon." The piece the album came to be known for is Timmons' gospel-inflected "Dat Dere," which the label frames as a follow-up to his earlier Messengers hit "Moanin'."

Mosaic Records counts nine Blue Note albums recorded by this edition of the Messengers between March 1960 and May 1961. Reid Miles designed the jacket around a Francis Wolff photograph, and Nat Hentoff wrote the original liner notes.
