Single Disc CD, Jewel Case

The live album on one Columbia compact disc, catalog number CK 67703, in a standard jewel case: thirteen tracks, a little over seventy-one minutes, the running order Columbia issued on July 30, 1996.

MTV had been asking Alice in Chains to record an acoustic session for years, and the band had turned the network down each time; Jerry Cantrell's reservation was that the group would be hard to make sound right unamplified. They agreed in 1996, and the show was taped that April in Brooklyn.

The set draws on every Alice in Chains release up to that point except the debut, Facelift. That omission was not deliberate: "We Die Young" and "Love, Hate, Love" were prepared and then dropped when the taping ran short of time. Four of the thirteen songs come from Dirt and four from the 1995 self-titled album, with two each from Sap and Jar of Flies.

The stage was dressed with lava lamps on a late request. Nobody had warmed them beforehand, so the wax sits almost still through the performance. The lighting technician matched the backdrop to Layne Staley's hair, which he had recently dyed pink, and a separate color scheme was set for every song in advance, the band having handed MTV its setlist before the taping.

"Over Now" went to radio as a single in July 1996, and the acoustic "Would?" followed in October. The Brooklyn taping was the last headlining performance Staley played with Alice in Chains; he died in 2002.
