Black Vinyl, 30th Anniversary Remastered Edition

Columbia and Legacy cut the thirtieth-anniversary Dirt across two 12-inch LPs for September 23, 2022, under catalog number 19439953541, with the album remastered and the thirteen tracks laid out three and four to a side. This is the standard black pressing, issued in the United States. Sony's announcement also named an apple red variant for one retail channel and a translucent orange variant sold direct by the band.

That announcement calls Dirt the last Alice in Chains album recorded by the group's four founding members. It was the band's second studio album, made with Dave Jerden, who had produced Facelift in 1990. Jerry Cantrell wrote most of the material; Layne Staley wrote "Hate to Feel" and "Angry Chair" by himself and played guitar on both.

Cantrell wrote "Rooster" for his father, Jerry Cantrell Sr., who served in Vietnam and was called Rooster as a boy. In the notes to the 1999 box set Music Bank he described the song as "the start of the healing process between my Dad and I from all that damage that Vietnam caused." He has said "Them Bones" is about "mortality, that one of these days we'll end up a pile of bones," and that the closing song, "Would?," was written for Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone.

Three songs on the second half of the record deal directly with heroin use: "Junkhead," "God Smack" and "Hate to Feel." Cantrell told The Skinny in 2013 that the album was "more of a warning than anything else," and that "within that there was always a survivor element."

The short untitled interlude between "God Smack" and "Hate to Feel" carries a vocal from Tom Araya of Slayer. Kerrang! voted Dirt its Critic's Choice Album of the Year for 1992, and in October 2011 Guitar World placed it first among that year's guitar albums. Billboard put US sales at 3,358,000 copies as of 2008.
