RSD Essentials #109 Storm Black Swirl 2LP Vinyl

Number 109 in the Record Store Day Essentials series: Jive's double-LP edition of The Low End Theory, pressed on two storm black swirl discs. The product image supplied for this edition shows both records as clear vinyl run through with black smoke, sitting beside the jacket. The fourteen tracks of the 1991 album are spread across four sides.

The Low End Theory was A Tribe Called Quest's second album, issued by Jive on September 24, 1991. It was recorded mostly at Battery Studios in Manhattan across 1990 and 1991 and produced by the group, primarily Q-Tip, with Ali Shaheed Muhammad co-producing and handling the scratching; Skeff Anselm co-produced "Show Business" and "Everything Is Fair." Bob Power mixed the record and Tom Coyne mastered it. The jazz bassist Ron Carter plays on "Verses from the Abstract," and Q-Tip's recreation of a Pete Rock beat on "Jazz (We've Got)" carries a credit to Rock in the song's outro.

Q-Tip and Phife Dawg share the microphone throughout, and the closing "Scenario" is a posse cut with Leaders of the New School, Busta Rhymes among them. "Check the Rhime," "Jazz (We've Got)" and "Scenario" were released as singles; the video for "Check the Rhime" is above. The album peaked at No. 45 on the Billboard 200 and No. 13 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, was certified gold by the RIAA in February 1992 and platinum in February 1995, and was selected for the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2022. Rolling Stone placed it at No. 43 on its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The cover, an altered photograph of a kneeling woman painted in Afrocentric colors, is credited to photographer Joe Grant with design by Zombart JK.
