Sony's Legacy imprint reissues 40 Dayz & 40 Nightz on two black LPs, with the album's 17 tracks spread across four sides and the original cover art on the jacket.

Loud Records and RCA first released the album on August 25, 1998. It was Xzibit's second, following At the Speed of Life in 1996, and it reached No. 58 on the Billboard 200 and No. 14 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. "What U See Is What U Get" was the most successful of its four singles, peaking at No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100; "Los Angeles Times," "Pu**y Pop" and "3 Card Molly" were the others.

Sessions ran through 1997 and 1998 at six Los Angeles-area studios, among them Sound Castle and Record One. Sir Jinx produced seven tracks, most of them with Xzibit as co-producer, and the rest came from Bud'da, Jesse West, DJ Pen One, A Kid Called Roots, Soopafly, DJ Glove, Mel-Man, E-Swift and Montageone. "Los Angeles Times" had already appeared on the soundtrack to the 1997 film Soul in the Hole.

The guest list includes Ras Kass and Saafir on "3 Card Molly," Defari on "Handle Your Business," Jayo Felony and Method Man on "Pu**y Pop," and Tha Alkaholiks with King Tee on "Let It Rain." Born Alvin Joiner in Detroit, Xzibit was a member of the Likwit Crew before his 1996 debut on Loud. His next album, Restless, arrived in 2000 with Dr. Dre as executive producer and reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200.
