Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf Series 180g Black Vinyl LP

Craft Recordings issues Song of Songs here under its Jazz Dispensary imprint as part of the Top Shelf Series, the line the label is using to mark Jazz Dispensary's tenth anniversary. This edition, catalog number CR00971, is an all-analog (AAA) cut from the original tapes, pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing and housed in a tip-on jacket built around the original Contemporary Records cover.

The back of the jacket reproduces the original sleeve's long liner essay: Shaw's own account of learning the trumpet in Newark, his years with Horace Silver and the thinking behind each of the four pieces, transcribed from a taped interview at Contemporary on October 4, 1972. Cover and liner photographs are by Bret Lopez, with design by George Kershaw.

Song of Songs was Shaw's second album as a leader, coming after Blackstone Legacy and before The Moontrane. It was recorded at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles on September 15 and 18, 1972, produced by Lester Koenig and John Koenig with Michael Denecke as session engineer, and released by Contemporary in 1973. Shaw plays trumpet alongside Emanuel Boyd on flute and tenor saxophone, Ramon Morris on tenor saxophone, George Cables on piano and electric piano, Henry Franklin on bass and Woodrow Theus II on drums and percussion; Bennie Maupin takes the tenor chair on "The Goat and the Archer."

Shaw wrote all four compositions. Craft's notes say the nearly 12-minute title track is built on an Indonesian five-note scale and was dedicated to the people of Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, that "The Goat and the Archer" takes its name from his Capricorn sign, and that "Love: For the One You Can't Have" was written after his separation from his wife. Writing for AllMusic, Scott Yanow placed the music "between hard bop, modal musings and the avant-garde."

The label's notes add that Shaw went on to record more than two dozen albums as a leader over the next two decades and to earn multiple Grammy nominations, and they name Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis and Chris Botti among the trumpeters he influenced.
