Fania released Cosa Nuestra in 1969, and it became the first of Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe's records to go gold in the United States - followed by La Gran Fuga in 1971, El Juicio in 1972 and Lo Mato in 1973. Jerry Masucci produced the album; Johnny Pacheco was recording director.

Most of the material is the duo's own. "Che Che Colé" opens the record and became the track that carried it. Behind Colón's trombone and Lavoe's vocal: Eric Matos on second trombone, Milton Cardona on congas, Louie Romero on timbales, José Torres on piano, Santi González on bass, and José Mangual Jr. on bongos and cowbell. The album's original liner notes, reproduced on the back of this jacket and signed "Arturo," single out Lavoe's readings of "Te Conozco" and the bolero "Ausencia."

The sleeve is part of the record's standing. Henri Wolfe photographed Colón on the Brooklyn waterfront in a dark suit, a long case under one arm and two bodies at his feet, the bridge behind him; Izzy Sanabria designed it. Rolling Stone named the album one of the 50 Greatest Salsa Albums of All Time in October 2024.

Craft's reissue was remastered entirely in the analog domain, with AAA lacquers cut from the original master tapes, and is pressed on 180 gram black vinyl. The jacket reproduces the original Fania artwork front and back, carrying catalog number CR01056.
