Dark Indigo 2LP, First Vinyl Pressing

Whiskeytown's 1995 debut had never been released on vinyl before this double LP. Lost Highway presents it as the album's first-ever vinyl pressing: two dark indigo discs holding 21 songs, cut for vinyl by Levi Seitz at Black Belt Mastering, with Side D given over entirely to five "Baseball Park Sessions" recordings. Diverse Vinyl lists the set in a gatefold sleeve.

The running order follows Outpost's expanded 1998 reissue rather than the original Mood Food disc, a detail The Vinyl Cut noted in its July 31, 2026 reissue roundup. That 1998 edition added material from the period and dropped "Oklahoma," a track Ryan Adams said had gone onto the first release over his objections; he also cited the original's muddy sound as a reason to reissue it.

The album itself was made quickly. In July 1995 the band set up at the Funny Farm in Apex, North Carolina, and by Adams's account finished tracking in about a week and a half; "Hard Luck Story" was written in the studio and on tape minutes later. The lineup the label credits is Caitlin Cary on fiddle and vocals, Phil Wandscher on guitar, Steve Grothmann on bass, Eric "Skillet" Gilmore on drums, and Adams on vocals and guitar.

The Baseball Park sessions were among the band's 1996 recordings around Chapel Hill and Durham, and several songs from them were re-recorded for Strangers Almanac the following year. Two of the Side D titles, "16 Days" and "Yesterday's News," became the radio tracks from that album. Adams once said in an interview that he preferred these earlier songs to the finished record.

On its first release, Faithless Street drew strong notices in No Depression and helped earn Whiskeytown a deal with Outpost, Geffen's imprint; Pitchfork has since called it "an alt-country touchstone."
