Indie Exclusive Magenta With Black Splatter Vinyl 12-Inch EP

This is the indie-retail exclusive edition of the Whirr & Luster Split, a four-song 12-inch EP on Free Whirl Records, pressed on magenta vinyl with black splatter under catalog number FW016VINDIE. Closed Casket Activities, which distributes the release, lists 1,000 copies in this colorway, one of ten vinyl colorways spread across label, store and regional exclusives. Black Ice with Blue Splatter is the general retail pressing, and a CD EP was issued alongside.

Side A belongs to Whirr, the California shoegaze band guitarist Nick Bassett started under the name Whirl. Its albums run from Pipe Dreams (2012) and Sway (2014) to Feels Like You (2019) and Raw Blue (2024), and the current five-piece lineup is Bassett, Loren Rivera, Joseph Bautista, Eddie Salgado and Devin Nunes. Bassett also played bass in Nothing from 2013 to 2018 and guitar in the original lineup of Deafheaven. Whirr produced its two songs here, "Spiral Again" and "Wish I Could Give You The World," with Zac Montez.

Side B is by Luster, from Los Angeles. Free Whirl's notes say Bassett produced and mixed most of Luster's earlier recordings, among them Blue Oblivion (2020) and Dopamine Loop (2023) on Funeral Party Records. Luster's two songs, "Against the World" and "Forever," were also produced with Montez. Free Whirl's notes describe the four songs together as a conversation about distance, obsession and the ache of never being able to give someone enough.
