This is the standard black vinyl edition of SZNZ: Winter: one 12-inch disc cut to play at 45 RPM, made in the USA for Crush Music and Atlantic. It reached stores on December 1, 2023, close to a year after the music first appeared digitally, and it carries a song the streaming version does not: "Why Don't You Get Me," a vinyl-only addition placed third on side B.
Winter closed Weezer's SZNZ (pronounced "seasons") project, four EPs made and released in real time through 2022; this one arrived digitally on December 21, 2022, the winter solstice. Rivers Cuomo, who wrote every song, described the project's overall emotion as sadness and named Elliott Smith as the stylistic model for the winter set. The label's announcement calls it a stripped back, acoustic-leaning body of work. Before release, the band played it in full at the Troubadour in West Hollywood on September 19, 2022, billed as Goat Punishment.
Suzy Shinn, James Flannigan and Cuomo produced it, with recording at Groove Masters in Santa Monica, the Village Recorder in Los Angeles and Funkhaus Berlin. "I Want a Dog," which opens side A, was the lead single, issued on December 9, 2022, and the band performed it on Jimmy Kimmel Live the following week.
