Black Vinyl LP

This is Geffen's October 2016 vinyl reissue of Pinkerton: a single black LP, catalog number B0025153-01, issued in the US with DGC and UMe on the label credits. A hype sticker on the jacket notes that it was cut by Direct Metal Mastering at Abbey Road Mastering Studios. The record comes in a standard jacket with a 12x12 printed insert, and the center labels carry the DGC logo above each side's running order.

The insert reproduces the album's original credits. Weezer produced the record themselves, Jack Joseph Puig mixed it at Ocean Way Recording in Hollywood, and George Marino mastered it at Sterling Sound in New York. Sessions ran in September 1995, January 1996 and June 1996 across Sound City and Hollywood Sound Recorders in Los Angeles, Rumbo Recorders in Canoga Park, Fort Apache Studios in Boston and Electric Lady Studios in New York. Spike Jonze is credited for photography.

Pinkerton was Weezer's second album, first released by DGC on September 24, 1996. Rivers Cuomo wrote most of it while studying at Harvard, after setting aside a planned rock opera called Songs from the Black Hole, and the band produced it without an outside producer to get closer to their live sound. The title is taken from B.F. Pinkerton, the American naval officer in Puccini's Madama Butterfly, and the cover reproduces Hiroshige's woodblock print Night Snow at Kanbara. It was also the last Weezer album with bassist Matt Sharp, who left in 1998.

The album debuted at number 19 on the Billboard 200 and drew mixed reviews, with "El Scorcho" and "The Good Life" released as singles. Its standing rose in the years that followed: it was certified platinum in the US in September 2016, about six weeks before this reissue's street date, and several emo bands have named it as an influence.
