Blue Note Essential Vinyl Series 140g Black Vinyl

This LP comes from the Blue Note Essential Vinyl Series, the label's lower-priced line of core catalog titles. The series sticker on the jacket reads "Essential Titles - Great Price." Blue Note states that Essential titles are mastered from hi-resolution digital masters and pressed on 140 gram vinyl. The jacket keeps the original 84194 catalog mark, and the black disc carries Blue Note's Stereo Long Playing center label. That is a different approach from the label's Classic Vinyl Series cut of this album, which Kevin Gray mastered all-analog from the original tapes for 180g vinyl.

Shorter led the session at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on Christmas Eve 1964, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Alfred Lion produced. All six pieces are Shorter originals, and Hubbard sits out the ballad "Infant Eyes." It was Shorter's third album for Blue Note in 1964, after Night Dreamer and JuJu, and his first year as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet. Blue Note issued it in 1966 as BLP 4194 in mono and BST 84194 in stereo.

The Penguin Guide to Jazz placed the album in its suggested Core Collection, and New York Times critic Ben Ratliff included it in his book on the 100 most important jazz recordings. The cover photograph features Teruko (Irene) Nakagami, Shorter's first wife.
