Numbered Edition, 180g 45 RPM 2LP, Stoughton Gatefold

Mobile Fidelity's numbered Original Master Recording of Warren Zevon's fourth album, the first time it has been cut for an audiophile vinyl edition. The chain runs from the quarter-inch, 15 IPS Dolby A analog master through DSD 256 and an analog console to the lathe; Krieg Wunderlich mastered and cut it, Fidelity Record Pressing pressed it, and the four 45 RPM sides sit in a Stoughton gatefold jacket.

Zevon and Greg Ladanyi produced the album at The Sound Factory in Hollywood in 1979, with Ladanyi engineering. The guest list runs to Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Waddy Wachtel, Ben Keith, J.D. Souther, David Lindley and four Eagles — Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Don Felder. Ronstadt sings the descant on "Empty-Handed Heart"; Walsh plays lead on "Jungle Work" and "Jeannie Needs a Shooter", which Zevon wrote with Bruce Springsteen. The Sid Sharp Strings play the two short interludes, which reflect Zevon's classical interest and his admiration for Stravinsky, whom he once met. Zevon's own credit list includes a .44 magnum pistol, fired into a barrel of sand for the shots that open the title track.

He made the record while coming off alcohol and at the end of his marriage, and dedicated it to the crime novelist Kenneth Millar, who wrote as Ross Macdonald and helped him through the drying out. The back cover sets a pair of ballet shoes beside a machine gun and spent shells. The album reached No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and "A Certain Girl", Allen Toussaint's song, reached No. 57 on the Hot 100.

Asylum first issued it on February 15, 1980, as 5E-509.
