This is the first volume of A State of Trance Classics, a vinyl series from Armada Music, catalog number ASOTCSV001. One 12-inch record carries three trance tracks: side A, cut at 45 RPM, holds Armin van Buuren's "Communication" in its original mix, and side B, at 33 1/3 RPM, pairs The Thrillseekers' "Synaesthesia" in its En-Motion extended remix with the extended mix of "Drifting Away" by Lange featuring Skye. The record was pressed by GZ Media and is distributed by Prime Direct Distribution. A State of Trance is Armin van Buuren's label and radio brand, and Armada presents the series as a celebration of it.

Van Buuren produced "Communication" on his own over two days at his parents' home in Leiden, and it was first released in 1999 on Cyber Records. In February 2000 it reached No. 2 on the UK Dance Singles Chart, and it peaked at No. 18 on the UK Singles Chart that year. It was later included on his debut album, 76.

The Thrillseekers is the recording name of producer Steve Helstrip, who also works as En-Motion, so the remix on side B is his own reworking of the track. The original "Synaesthesia" appeared on Neo Records in 1999, and a vocal version, "Synaesthesia (Fly Away)" with Sheryl Deane, reached No. 28 in the UK in 2000. Lange is Stuart Langelaan; "Drifting Away," with vocalist Skye, was released in 2002 on VC Recordings and reached No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart.
