Indie Exclusive Purple Opaque Vinyl LP

This is the independent-retail pressing of Shapes Of Midnight: a single LP on opaque purple vinyl, the edition Killer Candy Records set aside for indie record shops in North America. The label catalogs the album as KCR 004 and splits its vinyl run by outlet, with a black edition for general retail, a Black Ice glitter edition for Europe and a red-and-white edition sold only through its own webstore alongside this purple one.

It is the seventh full-length album from Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, the band Kevin Starrs formed in Cambridge, England in 2009, and it is released on Killer Candy, the band's own label. It follows Nell' Ora Blu, which the label's notes describe as a synth-led soundtrack for an imaginary giallo film.

The band tracked the record live to analog tape at Abbey Road Studios in three days with engineer Chris Bolster, whose earlier clients Killer Candy lists as including Phil Spector, Ozzy Osbourne and Paul McCartney. The sessions used antique Neumann microphones along with period consoles and compressors, and Grammy-nominated engineer Noel Summerville mastered the album.

Killer Candy describes it as a concept album drawn partly from Edgar Allan Poe's The Masque of the Red Death, and as a return to the guitar-led attack of the band's earlier records. Starrs has said of the band's albums, "They're all stories that could happen here, but everything's just a bit 'off.'" The lineup is Starrs on vocals and lead guitar, George Hudson on rhythm guitar and vocals, Jus Smith on bass, Jon Rice on drums and Rachel Burnett on keys and vocals.
