Black Vinyl 2LP

XL Recordings pressed Goblin as two black LPs, catalog XLLP529, the album's fifteen songs laid out across four sides and the track names set in a ring around the photograph on the back cover. The program runs seventy-three minutes.

Goblin is Tyler, The Creator's second album and the first he released through a label, out May 10, 2011 after XL signed him on the strength of "Yonkers." He produced all of it himself apart from "Transylvania," which Left Brain produced, and recorded it at Opra Music and The Trap in Los Angeles. The record continues the sessions with Dr. TC, the fictional therapist first heard on Bastard in 2009; on the closing track, "Golden," Dr. TC turns out to be Tyler's own conscience.

Frank Ocean sings on "She" and returns on "Window," which also carries Domo Genesis, Hodgy Beats and Mike G. Hodgy Beats appears again on "Sandwitches" and "Analog," and Jasper Dolphin and Taco on "Bitch Suck Dick." "AU79" is an instrumental, and "Fish" contains the hidden track "Boppin' Bitch." Earl Sweatshirt, the member Tyler was closest to at the time, is on none of it; he was at school in Samoa through the sessions. Three singles led the way, "Sandwitches" in October 2010, "Yonkers" in February 2011 and "She" on release day.

The album entered the Billboard 200 at number five, sold 45,000 copies in its first week and was certified gold by the RIAA in January 2018. Metacritic averages 72 from thirty-seven reviews. Goblin works in the horrorcore register, violent narratives delivered in character, and that content is what most of the argument about the record was about. Scott Plagenhoef, writing in Pitchfork, called the fantasies "depraved and despicable" and in the same breath "one aspect of a larger, character-driven story - a license that we grant to visual arts, film, and literature but rarely to pop music." Tyler's own assessment, given to GQ in 2018, was that he would keep seven of the fifteen songs: "Yonkers," "She," "Nightmare," "Tron Cat," "Fish," "Analog" and "AU79."
