The ruby red LP is the colored vinyl edition of ESTRUS sold through general retail; it ships in a gatefold jacket, and its inner sleeve is printed. Two other vinyl editions exist: a coke bottle clear pressing reserved for independent record stores, and a red opaque edition sold only through Tove Lo's own web store.

The album takes its name from the estrus cycle in mammals. Its thirteen tracks are laid out seven to side A, from the opening "a lot of feelings, no solutions" to "I'm the cake," and six to side B, from "the bad one" to "source of life." "des fleurs x stromae" lists Stromae as a co-writer under his given name, Paul van Haver, and was co-produced by A Strut and TimFromTheHouse.

Her 2014 debut, Queen of the Clouds, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 14 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2016; its single "Talking Body" reached No. 12 on the Hot 100. Lady Wood followed in 2016, topping the Swedish album chart and reaching No. 11 in the US, then Blue Lips in 2017 and Sunshine Kitty in 2019, whose "Glad He's Gone" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video.

Away from her own albums, Lo co-wrote "Homemade Dynamite" for Lorde's Melodrama and appears on Nick Jonas's "Close," a No. 14 Hot 100 single, and on Flume's "Say It," a top-five hit in Australia and New Zealand.
