Indie Exclusive Limited Edition 180 Gram Galaxy Ruby Translucent & Black Opaque Vinyl

This is the independent-retail edition of No Sleep Til L.A., pressed on 180-gram vinyl in translucent galaxy ruby and opaque black and sold only through independent record stores. The jacket's sticker marks it as a limited edition, the front cover carries a black-and-white photograph of the band beneath the Shelter Records logo, and the disc labels use Shelter's planet design.

Before the Heartbreakers there was Mudcrutch, formed in Gainesville, Florida, in 1970 by Petty and Tom Leadon, with Mike Campbell and later Benmont Tench in the lineup. The band moved to Los Angeles in 1974 and signed with Leon Russell's Shelter Records, which released "Depot Street" backed with "Wild Eyes" as a single in 1975, then broke Mudcrutch up late that year and kept only Petty under contract. Months later he regrouped with Campbell and Tench as the Heartbreakers.

Alan "Bugs" Weidel's note for the album explains the stretch in between: on Denny Cordell's advice Petty first recorded as a solo artist with session players, which is why the musicians change from track to track. Weidel places "Parade of Loons" and "Sin City" in the sessions for You're Gonna Get It!, the band's second album, released in 1978.

The Mudcrutch material includes "Up in Mississippi Tonight," the band's first single on a local label, alongside "Depot Street" and "Wild Eyes," each heard here in a 2026 mix. No Sleep Til L.A. is also the core of Origins 1971-1978, UMe's 50th-anniversary box set of the band's early years, which shares this edition's November 6 street date.
