Spaceflight Records presses ...And Flames Ran Like Living Animals as a single 180 gram black LP, with four songs on side A and five on side B. It is the fourth full-length album by The Well, the Austin power trio of Ian Graham on guitar and vocals, Lisa Alley on bass and vocals and Jason Sullivan on drums, and their first for Spaceflight, a nonprofit label based in the same city.

The band's first three albums, Samsara, Pagan Science (2016) and Death and Consolation (2019), were released by RidingEasy Records. The label's notes for this one place it in '70s proto-metal, '60s psychedelia, Southern sludge and New Wave, and name Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, Sleep and Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats as reference points.

Bryan Richie recorded the first four songs at Paper Weapons Studio in Taylor, Texas. The rest were recorded with Chico Jones, who has worked on every Well album and mixed this one, and Max Lorenzen mastered the record. Lisa Alley has described the approach as a decision "to treat these first new songs with care."

"New Hallelujah for the Damned," the first song on side B, is the video above. Olivia Maaghul directed it at the SST warehouse, with a cameo from SST Records founder Greg Ginn.
