Black Vinyl LP

This is RCA's US vinyl edition of Room on Fire, catalog number 82876 55497-1: a single black LP carrying six songs on side one and five on side two. The sleeve credits place the recording at TMF Studios in New York and the mastering at Sterling Sound, with Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone credited for mastering.

The jacket reproduces War/Game, a 1961 oil-and-wood painting by Peter Phillips, used with permission and courtesy of Zoe Phillips and credited on the sleeve to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. Brett Kilroe handled art direction and Colin Lane the photography.

Room on Fire is the second studio album by the Strokes, issued by RCA in the US on October 28, 2003, eight days after its UK release. The band began the sessions with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, then scrapped that work, which they said had come out "soulless," and returned to Gordon Raphael, the producer of Is This It. They had three months of studio time left to finish the record, and guitarist Nick Valensi has said it would have ended up better with another couple of weeks. The title comes from a lyric in "Reptilia."

The lineup is Julian Casablancas on vocals, Albert Hammond Jr. and Nick Valensi on guitars, Nikolai Fraiture on bass and Fabrizio Moretti on drums.

The album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and number two on the UK Albums Chart. The RIAA certified it Gold in December 2003 and platinum in June 2021. Three singles came from it: "12:51," "Reptilia" and "The End Has No End." Roman Coppola directed the "12:51" video above, which puts the band on a set modeled on the game grid in TRON. In 2021 Pitchfork revisited its original 8.0 review and said it would now give the album 9.2.
