Remastered 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP in Gatefold Sleeve

This is Rhino's single-LP reissue of The Queen Is Dead, pressed on 180-gram black vinyl under catalog number 2564665887, with the distributor's listing identifying all ten songs as the 2011 remasters. The disc labels carry a 1986 Warner Music UK copyright and a Made in the E.U. line. The jacket is a single-pocket, unlaminated gatefold whose inside spread prints the lyrics to every song opposite a photograph of the band outside Salford Lads Club. The record sits in a replica of the original inner sleeve, made in matte paper where first pressings used gloss card.

The film above is Derek Jarman's short for the title track, the song that opens side one. The Queen Is Dead was the band's third studio album, first issued by Rough Trade in June 1986. Morrissey and Johnny Marr produced it with engineer Stephen Street, recording between July and December 1985 at RAK Studios in London, Jacobs Studios in Farnham and Drone Studios in Manchester; the Farnham sessions ran under the working title "Margaret on the Guillotine." The sped-up, harmonized vocals on "Bigmouth Strikes Again" and the title song are credited on the sleeve to "Ann Coates," a nod to the Manchester district of Ancoats.

The title is borrowed from Hubert Selby Jr.'s 1964 novel Last Exit to Brooklyn, and the cover is a still of French actor Alain Delon from the 1964 film The Unvanquished. The album spent 22 weeks on the UK Albums Chart, peaking at number two, reached number 70 on the US Billboard chart and was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1990. NME named it the greatest album of all time in a 2013 list, and Rolling Stone placed it at number 113 on its 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums.
