180 Gram 5LP Box Set, Black Vinyl, 30th Anniversary Reissue

Virgin and UMe return The Aeroplane Flies High to vinyl for the first time since 2013, on five 180-gram black records in a slipcase, recreating that 2013 five-LP edition. The thirty-three tracks of the 1996 box run one disc per single, each record in its own printed sleeve.

The set collects expanded versions of the five singles drawn from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and each disc carries the B-sides, outtakes and covers that shipped with its single. The covers sit together on the first record: the Cars' "You're All I've Got Tonight," Alice Cooper's "Clones (We're All)," the Cure's "A Night Like This," Missing Persons' "Destination Unknown" and Blondie's "Dreaming." The third record closes with the "Pastichio Medley," twenty-three minutes built from seventy named riff fragments recorded between Siamese Dream and the completion of Mellon Collie, among them an early version of "X.Y.U." and an instrumental that became the box's title track.

Virgin issued The Aeroplane Flies High in 1996, between Mellon Collie and Adore, with a 44-page booklet of photographs, writing by Billy Corgan and lyrics. It was planned as a limited run of 200,000 copies; the run sold out and Virgin pressed more, and the box reached number 42 on the Billboard 200. Corgan, James Iha, Flood, Alan Moulder and D'arcy Wretzky share the production credits, and Corgan supervised the 2013 remaster that this edition reproduces. The video above is "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," which opens the first record.
