20th Anniversary Remaster on Black Vinyl

This is the standard black-vinyl LP of Sub Pop's 20th anniversary edition of Oh, Inverted World, issued on June 11, 2021 under catalog number SP1415. The audio was remastered by Bob Ludwig, with James Mercer of The Shins assisting. The jacket is die-cut and carries the cover art redrawn in an inverted color scheme, and inside are an inner sleeve and a booklet of vintage photos, handwritten lyrics and liner notes. Sub Pop pressed a separate Loser Edition on light blue and white marble vinyl; this pressing is the black disc.

The remaster answers an old complaint. Asked in 2003 whether he was happy with how the album came out, Mercer said, "As far as how it sounds, no." That same year the computer holding his mastered files for this album and its follow-up, Chutes Too Narrow, was stolen. The remaster was still possible because the mastering company had kept the original masters on DAT. John Golden had mastered the 2001 release.

Oh, Inverted World was the band's debut, recorded by Mercer with Marty Crandall on keyboards, Neal Langford on bass and Jesse Sandoval on drums. Several songs began in Mercer's earlier band, Flake Music. It placed 35th in the Pazz & Jop critics' poll for 2001, and "New Slang" and "Caring Is Creepy" both reached a wider audience through the 2004 film Garden State. In May 2023 the RIAA certified the album platinum, making it the third Sub Pop release to reach that level, after Nirvana's Bleach and The Postal Service's Give Up. The video above is Sub Pop's official "New Slang" clip, reissued with the 2021 remastered audio.
