Black Vinyl, 20th Anniversary Remaster

Sub Pop issued this 20th anniversary edition of Chutes Too Narrow on October 20, 2023, under catalog number SP1570. Adam Ayan remastered the album at Gateway Mastering with James Mercer supervising, and the lacquers for this pressing were cut by John Golden at Golden Mastering. The jacket is a custom die-cut design and the single LP sits in a printed inner sleeve. Sub Pop also ran a Loser Edition of this reissue on sun yellow vinyl; that pressing carries its own barcode, and this product is the black one.

Chutes Too Narrow was the band's second album, released by Sub Pop on October 21, 2003 as the follow-up to Oh, Inverted World. James Mercer wrote all ten songs and recorded them in the basement of his Portland, Oregon home over June and July of that year; the band produced, and Phil Ek mixed the record at Avast! Recording Co. in Seattle. Mercer sang and played guitar and harmonica, with Marty Crandall on keyboards, Dave Hernandez on bass and guitar, and Jesse Sandoval on drums. Kevin Suggs added pedal steel, and Anne Marie Ruljancich played the violin part on "Saint Simon."

Pitchfork designated the album Best New Music on release and Rolling Stone gave it four stars; it carries a Metacritic score of 88. It reached number 86 on the Billboard 200 and number 82 in the UK, and finished the year at number six on Billboard's albums list and in the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll, and at number seven on Pitchfork's and Mojo's. Billboard reported Nielsen SoundScan sales of more than 393,000 US copies as of August 2008. Jesse LeDoux's cover art was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.

Mercer has said of the record, "I was very aware at the time that I had struck gold with the first record, and it was unlikely to happen again. The pressure to prove myself as a viable writer had never been so pronounced." He has also described writing "Young Pilgrims" late in the mixing process, after deciding that one of the songs would not work; the album takes its title from a line in it.
