Moodsville Acoustic Sounds Series 180 Gram LP in Tip-On Jacket

Moodsville, Volume 1 is the record that opened Prestige's Moodsville imprint, and it returns as one of the three first titles in the Moodsville Acoustic Sounds Series from Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds. This edition is cut from the original tapes with all-analog mastering by Matthew Lutthans of The Mastering Lab and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at QRP. Its tip-on jacket reproduces Emmett McBain's original cover design and Ron Eyre's notes, and carries the catalog number CR00956. The distributor lists the edition with an OBI.

Prestige started Moodsville in 1960, alongside its Swingville line. In Craft's account the imprint set out to sit between fully improvised jazz and formula mood music, asking leading players for melodic readings of standards meant for listening late at night, and it ran until 1963.

The session was recorded on December 11, 1959 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Esmond Edwards producing, and issued in 1960 as MVLP 1. Garland's trio here is bassist Sam Jones and drummer Art Taylor. Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis plays tenor saxophone on three pieces, "We'll Be Together Again", "Softly Baby" and "When Your Lover Has Gone", as the jacket marks them, and the trio plays the other five alone. Garland wrote "Softly Baby" and "The Red Blues"; the rest are standards, including "Stella By Starlight" and Rodgers and Hart's "Blue Room".

Garland, born in Dallas in 1923, joined Miles Davis's quintet in 1955 and played on its Prestige albums Workin', Steamin', Cookin' and Relaxin'. Between 1956 and 1962 he made some 25 albums for Prestige and Moodsville. Davis, born in New York in 1922, recorded prolifically for Prestige in the same years, co-led a quintet with Johnny Griffin from 1960 to 1962, and played with Count Basie's orchestra over several decades.
