Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP In A Tip-On Jacket With Obi

This is the Original Jazz Classics Series pressing of Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet, issued by Craft Recordings for Miles Davis' centennial. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio in an all-analog (AAA) chain, and RTI pressed the record on 180-gram black vinyl. It comes in a Stoughton tip-on jacket wrapped with an Original Jazz Classics obi strip, which lists the session credits and quotes Don Gold's four-star DownBeat review.

The jacket and labels keep the Prestige look under catalog number CR00942: Esmond Edwards' cover design on the front, the yellow Prestige label on the disc, and Ira Gitler's original liner notes on the back.

Prestige first issued Relaxin' in March 1958 as PRLP 7129. Davis recorded it in 1956 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, with John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, and Bob Weinstock supervising. The same 1956 Prestige sessions also yielded Cookin', Workin' and Steamin'.

Gitler's notes describe the tunes being played one after another like a nightclub set, with no second takes, and the studio talk stayed on the tape: a false start and Davis' instructions to Garland ahead of "You're My Everything," and his remark to Weinstock before "If I Were a Bell" that he would play it and name it later. Davis plays with a mute on every track except Dizzy Gillespie's "Woody'n You."
