Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram LP, Stoughton Tip-On Jacket and Obi Strip

This is Craft Recordings' Original Jazz Classics edition of Cookin' With The Miles Davis Quintet, catalog number CR00944, with a street date of August 14, 2026. Craft issued it for the Miles Davis centennial, on the same day as an OJC reissue of John Coltrane's 1957 Prestige album Coltrane.

The cut is all-analog. Kevin Gray made the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original master tapes, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. It comes in a Stoughton tip-on jacket that keeps Reid Miles' design and Phil Hays' cover illustration, with the Prestige 7094 banner across the top, and the disc carries reproductions of the yellow Prestige labels. A gray Original Jazz Classics obi strip lists the personnel and session credits and quotes Ralph J. Gleason's five-star DownBeat review, which praised "the wild, driving swing" of the quintet. The back of the jacket reproduces Ira Gitler's original liner notes.

Original Jazz Classics began under Fantasy Records in 1982 and was relaunched by Craft in 2023. The series has now reissued more than 850 albums, drawn from catalogs including Prestige, Riverside, Contemporary and Pablo.

The music was recorded on October 26, 1956, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. It was the second of two marathon dates, the first on May 11, at which Davis taped enough material to finish his Prestige contract after signing with Columbia, and those two days filled four albums: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin' and Steamin'. Cookin' was the first of the four to be released, in 1957. Gitler's notes credit the title to Davis himself, who said that coming in and cooking was simply what the band had done.

The quintet is Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Coltrane sits out the opening Rodgers and Hart ballad, My Funny Valentine, which leaves Davis alone with the rhythm section, and the second side closes on a medley of Tune Up and When Lights Are Low.
