Black Vinyl LP With The Original 1966 Bathroom Cover

Geffen Records and UMe reissued the Mamas & the Papas' debut in 2021 as a single black vinyl LP in stereo. The jacket goes back to Guy Webster's first cover photograph, which shows the four singers in a bathtub with a toilet in the corner. That sleeve was pulled from stores in 1966 because the toilet was judged indecent, and later printings covered it with a scroll listing the songs. At least six versions of the cover were made. This one keeps the credit to "The Mama's and the Papa's", a stray apostrophe that no reissue has ever corrected. The back cover carries Andy Wickham's liner notes and the original credits.

Dunhill Records first released the album in 1966. Lou Adler produced it and Bones Howe engineered it. It was the group's only No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the chart for more than 100 weeks. "Monday, Monday" opens side one. John Phillips wrote it, Denny Doherty sang lead, and it became the group's only No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. "California Dreamin'", written by John and Michelle Phillips, reached No. 4. Rolling Stone placed the album at No. 127 on its 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums and at No. 112 in the 2012 revision. It is also in Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Cass Elliot, Denny Doherty, John Phillips and Michelle Phillips sing with a session band: P.F. Sloan on guitar, Larry Knechtel on keyboards, Joe Osborn on bass and Hal Blaine on drums. Bud Shank plays the flute solo on "California Dreamin'" and Peter Pilafian plays electric violin. Doherty and John Phillips co-wrote "Got A Feelin'". The covers include Lennon and McCartney's "I Call Your Name", Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance" and the Turtles' "You Baby". The album closes with Cass Elliot's version of Billy Page's "The 'In' Crowd". "Go Where You Wanna Go" was first issued as a single and then withdrawn, and "California Dreamin'" took its place as the A-side. The 5th Dimension later had a hit with the song.
