Music On Vinyl cut this edition all-analog from the original monophonic master tapes, so it is a mono record throughout rather than a stereo pressing folded down. Bernie Grundman cut the lacquers, and his initials are etched in the runout. The jacket reproduces the American sleeve — Karl Ferris's fisheye, infrared-process photograph, commissioned after Hendrix objected to the Bruce Fleming portrait used in Britain — and the record ships with a printed inner sleeve and liner notes by John McDermott.

The American and British editions of this album are different records. The American running order drops "Red House," "Remember" and "Can You See Me" and adds the first three British singles: "Hey Joe," "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary." This pressing follows the American sequence, down to the sleeve's own spelling of "Foxey Lady."

The Experience — Hendrix on guitar and vocals, Noel Redding on bass, Mitch Mitchell on drums — recorded between October 1966 and April 1967 at De Lane Lea, CBS and Olympic studios in London, with Chas Chandler producing and Eddie Kramer engineering the Olympic sessions. Chandler and the band mixed for mono first and treated the stereo mixes as secondary, which is the version this edition returns to.

The album reached No. 2 in the United Kingdom and No. 5 on the Billboard 200, where it stayed 106 weeks, 76 of them inside the Top 40, and No. 10 on the US R&B albums chart. The RIAA has certified it six times platinum.
