Three Black LPs, Wide-Spine Embossed Gatefold With Etched Side F

Open Wide and Columbia released Taking The Long Way on 23 May 2006. It was the band's first album after the night of 10 March 2003 at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London, where Natalie Maines told the audience the group did not want the coming war and were ashamed that the President of the United States was from Texas. Country radio dropped them, including all forty-two Cumulus Media stations; "Landslide" fell from No. 10 to No. 43 on the Hot 100 in a single week and left the chart the next; the band took death threats and played with metal detectors and round-the-clock security.

Rick Rubin produced the record. Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer co-wrote every song on it, with Dan Wilson of Semisonic on six, Gary Louris of The Jayhawks on four, and Mike Campbell, Neil Finn, Sheryl Crow, Linda Perry, Pete Yorn and Keb' Mo' on one apiece. John Mayer plays guitar on "I Hope," Bonnie Raitt sings background and Chad Smith drums. It entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 with 526,000 units and held the top in its second week; the RIAA certified it double platinum in July 2007. At the 49th Grammy Awards it took five, including Album of the Year and, for "Not Ready to Make Nice," Record and Song of the Year.

The anniversary edition spreads the fourteen-song album across two records and gives the third to five bonus tracks: demos of "Not Ready To Make Nice," "So Hard" and "Flowers," plus "Thin Line" and "Live Wire." Those last two were retail-exclusive bonus tracks in 2006 and reach vinyl here for the first time. Side F carries an etching of handwritten lyrics rather than audio.
