Silver Vinyl

The Builders and the Butchers formed in Portland, Oregon on Halloween 2005. All five founding members had moved down separately from Anchorage, Alaska, and they played their first shows as The Funeral Band, busking on the street and outside venues. This is their debut, recorded in 2007 in the living room of a house on SE Division Street, documenting songs they had been playing on the sidewalk since those first shows.

Singer Ryan Sollee has described the method: every instrument on it is made of wood and powered by a musician, with no electric instruments and almost no effects. For the singalong parts the band brought in about twenty close friends on a Sunday morning and recorded them as a choir. Sollee sings and plays acoustic guitar and percussion; Harvey Tumbelson plays banjo, acoustic guitar, mandolin and pump organ; Ray Rude plays marching drum and pump organ; Alexander Ellis and Paul Seely play bass, bass drum, percussion and trumpet. Adrienne Hatkin adds accordion and banjo, Annalisa Tornfelt violin, and Jason Wade Sechrist percussion. The band produced and engineered it with Mike Anzalone, and Lukas Ketner drew the sleeve.

Bladen County Records put it out on CD in 2007. The vinyl did not arrive until Jealous Butcher pressed it in November 2012, with Ryan Foster mastering at Freq Mastering; Sollee called the six-year wait "a damn shame." In May 2008 Willamette Week named the band Best New Band of the year and Seattle Sound named them Best Live Performers. This is a silver repress of the same twelve-song record.
