25th Anniversary Limited Edition Clear Cobalt Blue Vinyl

Clear cobalt blue is the third color in Friday Music's 25th anniversary series for Lions, following the clear Orange Crush and picture disc editions the label issued on August 14, 2026. Friday Music's own store lists this pressing as a limited edition, under catalog number FRM-27093.

Lions came out in May 2001 as the Black Crowes' sixth studio album. The band had left Columbia Records through a loophole in their contract and signed with Richard Branson's V2 Records in mid-2000. Rich Robinson said the band chose V2 because the label told them, "You guys go make the record you want to make. Then give it to us and we'll sell it." Chris Robinson described the title as "a symbol that stands for the fierce feeling and freedom that music allows you."

Chris Robinson has said that touring Led Zeppelin songs with Jimmy Page in 2000 shaped the record's sense of drama and dynamics, though not song by song, and that funk and R&B weighed more heavily than on earlier albums. "Miracle to Me" drew on the influence of Nick Drake, and Chris has said that song and "Soul Singing" were written with Kate Hudson, whom he married on December 31, 2000, in mind. Producer Don Was said of the lyrics, "He was writing about becoming a man."

Twenty songs were recorded for the album and thirteen made the final sequence. Three of the others, "Last Time Again," "Love Is Now" and "Sleepyheads," surfaced as B-sides. The band played "Soul Singing" on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on May 10, 2001, and toured North America that year, including dates co-headlining with Oasis. By January 2002 the album had sold 192,000 copies in the US, and the band went on hiatus after the tour until 2005.
