2012 Remaster CD With Mono & Stereo Mixes, HDCD Encoded

This is Capitol's 2012 CD of Pet Sounds, issued in the US on October 9, 2012, catalog number 50999 404426 24. One HDCD-encoded disc holds both versions of the album: the original mono mix as tracks 1 through 13, and the stereo mix as tracks 14 through 26. Mark Linett mastered it at Your Place Or Mine Recording in 2012, and the stereo mixes are credited to Linett, produced and mixed under Brian Wilson's supervision. The disc carries a rainbow Capitol label and sits in a gatefold card sleeve whose inside panels reproduce the photo collage from the back of the original LP.

It was one of twelve Beach Boys studio albums Capitol reissued in 2012, the band's 50th anniversary year, alongside the compilations Greatest Hits and 50 Big Ones. Linett, who had remastered many of the group's earlier reissues, prepared the series, and each album that had been mixed in mono carries its mono and stereo mixes together on one disc.

The album itself dates to May 16, 1966. Its main recording ran from January 18 to April 13, 1966, over 27 sessions at Western, Gold Star, Columbia and Sunset Sound, with Chuck Britz engineering. Wrecking Crew players including Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kaye on bass and Glen Campbell on guitar worked alongside Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine, and Tony Asher served as lyricist. George Jerman shot the cover at the San Diego Zoo on February 10, 1966.

Pet Sounds had no true stereo mix until the 1990s; the first appeared on the 1997 box The Pet Sounds Sessions. Three singles came from the record in the US: "Sloop John B" reached No. 3, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" reached No. 8 with "God Only Knows" on its B-side, and "Caroline, No," issued under Brian Wilson's own name, reached No. 32.
