Black 180-Gram Vinyl 2LP, 60th Anniversary Edition

This is the black-vinyl pressing of The Pet Sounds Sessions Highlights: two 180-gram LPs holding 25 a cappellas, alternate versions and tracking-session excerpts, which the band's official store notes are all on vinyl for the first time. Capitol Records and UMe issued it on May 15, 2026, one day before Pet Sounds turned 60. None of the material is previously unreleased; every track was drawn from a box set first issued in 1997.

That box is The Pet Sounds Sessions, a four-CD set produced by Brian Wilson with Mark Linett and David Leaf. It carried the album's first true stereo mix, created by Linett under Wilson's supervision, and it was nominated for Best Historical Album at the 1999 Grammy Awards.

The first LP opens with seven vocals-only tracks, among them "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows" and "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" with the instruments stripped away. Its second side turns to alternates: Mike Love singing lead on "I'm Waiting For The Day", Carl Wilson taking the first verse of "Sloop John B.", a saxophone-solo version of "God Only Knows", and "Hang On To Your Ego", the early lyric that became "I Know There's an Answer".

The second LP moves onto the studio floor, with highlights from the tracking dates for "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "That's Not Me", "God Only Knows" and the instrumental "Trombone Dixie". "Caroline, No" plays at its original recorded speed; for the 1966 album it was sped up by a semitone. Side four ends with two looks at "Good Vibrations", a tracking-date highlight and a stereo backing track. "I'm Waiting For The Day (Vocals Only)" is programmed on both LPs, opening side four after its appearance on side one.

New liner notes by Howie Edelson come with a detailed sessionography. The discs carry Capitol's rainbow-ring labels and travel in a gatefold jacket.

Pet Sounds itself was produced, arranged and primarily composed by Brian Wilson, with Tony Asher as lyricist.
