Rhino Reserve 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This edition brings Cosmic Thing into Rhino Reserve, the label's analog-sourced vinyl series. The lacquers were cut from the original analog master by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and the record is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing in Oxnard, California. Rhino's launch announcement for the series specifies a heavyweight board jacket, Rhino Reserve labels and a Fidelity-branded poly inner sleeve, and a sticker on the jacket front repeats the mastering credit.

It belongs to Rhino's Rocktober 2026 program, a run of 54 limited-edition vinyl titles that Rhino placed with select brick-and-mortar record stores.

Cosmic Thing is the fifth studio album by the B-52's, first released by Reprise in 1989. Six of its ten songs were produced by Nile Rodgers in New York City and the other four by Don Was at Dreamland Recording Studios in West Hurley, New York. The songs were the first the band wrote after the 1985 death of guitarist and founding member Ricky Wilson. Keith Strickland took over guitar and most of the composing, recording instrumental demos over which Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson and Fred Schneider worked out melodies and lyrics.

Opening single "Channel Z" reached No. 1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. "Love Shack" was the last song recorded for the album, climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and its video won Best Group Video at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards. With "Roam" and "Deadbeat Club" following, the album peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, reached No. 1 in Australia and New Zealand, and was certified four-times platinum in the US. Strickland has said he sequenced the record to tell a story from beginning to end; it closes on the instrumental "Follow Your Bliss".
