Arista released The Best Of The Alan Parsons Project in the US in 1983, and this copy was pressed at RCA's plant in Indianapolis. The I stamped into the deadwax on both sides is that plant's identifier.

The object

A single LP in a gatefold jacket, from a variation whose front cover carries no printed title. Its labels set "Best Of" above "The Alan Parsons Project," print "33 1/3 RPM" in the same size type as the catalog number and side indicator, and add "Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws" beneath the copyright lines.

The catalog number reads AL 8-8193 on the labels and AL8-8193 on the spine and rear cover. The label matrices are AL 8-8193 SA and AL 8-8193 SB.

Context

The compilation was new in 1983, so this copy belongs to its first year. The twelve tracks were remastered at Abbey Road Studios, with Chris Blair credited as mastering consultant. Alan Parsons is credited as producer and engineer and Eric Woolfson as executive producer, the two sharing the writing credits, while Andrew Powell is credited as arranger and conductor across all twelve. Lee Abrams wrote the liner notes, and the cover painting is by Stefan Knapp.
