Numbered Hybrid SACD, Mini-LP-Style Packaging

Mobile Fidelity's numbered hybrid SACD of Marquee Moon, in mini-LP-style packaging. One disc carries two layers: a stereo SACD layer and a Red Book stereo CD layer that plays on an ordinary CD player. Rob LoVerde mastered it at Mobile Fidelity in Sebastopol, California on the GAIN HD system. Note that the distributor feed lists this title as a plain CD; it is not.

This is the SACD, not Mobile Fidelity's UltraDisc One-Step 2LP box of the same album — a different product, a different barcode, and a different mastering chain.

Television cut the album at A & R Recording in New York in November 1976, in a small room chosen because it resembled the band's rehearsal space, on an all-tube board. Tom Verlaine and Andy Johns are both credited as producers; Johns engineered and mixed. He began by building the kind of ambient drum sound he had got on Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones records, then took it apart when the band asked for something dry and free of reverb. The main sessions ran barely a week, with piano and vocals overdubbed afterwards, and Johns came back months later to mix. While Richard Lloyd double-tracked the solo on "Elevation", Johns swung a vintage microphone over his head like a lasso.

The band is Verlaine on electric guitar, keyboards and lead vocals, Lloyd on electric guitar and backing vocals, Fred Smith on bass and backing vocals, and Billy Ficca on drums. Robert Mapplethorpe shot the cover.

Elektra first issued the album on 8 February 1977. It is Television's debut, made after roughly four years on the New York scene, and Adventure followed in 1978. It reached number 28 on the UK Albums Chart, number 23 in Sweden and number 92 in Australia, and did not chart in the American top 200. The title track, issued as a UK single on 1 April 1977, reached number 30. Rolling Stone placed the album 107th in the 2020 revision of its 500 Greatest Albums (128th in 2003) and the song 173rd in the 2021 edition of its 500 Greatest Songs (381st in 2004). Pitchfork put the album third on its Top 100 Albums of the 1970s.
