Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180g Vinyl LP

This is the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series edition of Together Again!!!!, catalog number CR00760, issued by Craft Recordings in 2024. Bernie Grundman, a GRAMMY-winning engineer who began his career at Contemporary, cut all-analog (AAA) lacquers from the original master tapes. The record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings (QRP) in Salina, Kansas, and housed in an old-style tip-on jacket by Stoughton.

Lester Koenig founded Contemporary Records in Los Angeles in 1951, and Craft launched the Acoustic Sounds Series in the spring of 2022 to return that catalog to print from the source tapes.

The session took place at Contemporary's own Los Angeles studio on May 15 and 17, 1961, with Koenig producing and Roy DuNann engineering. It pairs trumpeter Howard McGhee with tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards, an old friend, over a rhythm section of Phineas Newborn Jr. on piano, Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. Contemporary first issued it in 1961 as M 3588 and S 7588, and McGhee's Maggie's Back in Town!! followed on the label that same year. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings gives it four stars and calls it "one of the best mainstream albums of its day."

There are six pieces, three to a side. Edwards wrote the opening title track and McGhee the closer, "Sandy," and both run past nine minutes. Ray Brown contributed "Up There," the standard "You Stepped Out of a Dream" is by Nacio Herb Brown and Gus Kahn, and side two opens with Charlie Parker's "Perhaps" ahead of Erroll Garner's "Misty."
