Standard Black Pressing, 25th Anniversary LP Plus Etched 7-Inch

This is the black-vinyl configuration of the Toxicity anniversary package: one LP on the American Recordings label design, and a black 7-inch whose A-side is "Johnny" and whose B-side carries a custom etched "25" in place of a second song. A double-sided poster sits in the jacket alongside the records.

"Johnny" was kept off the 2001 album and reached buyers only through rare editions of it that year. Here it gets a sleeve of its own, with the etched side working as artwork rather than a track.

Both the jacket and the label copy now give the album's closing piece as "Der Voghormia." Earlier editions carried it as "Arto," and the anniversary release presents the change as a correction to the credit rather than a new title.

The album behind the reissue arrived on September 4, 2001, released by American Recordings and Columbia as the follow-up to the band's 1998 debut. It carries more melody, harmony and singing than that first record, and works folk, progressive rock, jazz and Armenian and Greek music into the arrangements, with sitar, banjo, keyboards and piano among the instruments. Daron Malakian has said the intention was to let Serj Tankian sing more while not losing "the heaviness of the band."

"Prison Song" is about mass incarceration, and Tankian has said it also addresses how drug money is used to rig elections abroad. Police brutality, the environment and addiction turn up elsewhere on the record.

Revolver placed Toxicity on its 2021 list of twenty essential nu-metal albums, and Loudwire ranked it second in a 2025 list of the fifty best.
