180 Gram Black Vinyl LP in Gatefold Jacket

Motown's single-LP edition of Music of My Mind, pressed on 180-gram black vinyl and housed in a gatefold jacket with the original album artwork. It was issued as part of Universal's Back to Black series of heavyweight vinyl reissues, under the Tamla catalog number 501 090 314-1.

Tamla released Music of My Mind on March 3, 1972. It was the first album Stevie Wonder made under a new Motown contract that gave him full artistic control. He produced it himself and played every instrument apart from Art Baron's trombone on "Love Having You Around" and Buzz Feiten's guitar on "Superwoman."

The album also began his partnership with Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff of Tonto's Expanding Head Band. The pair served as associate producers, engineered the sessions and handled the Moog programming, bringing their custom TONTO synthesizer into the work, and they went on to collaborate with Wonder on his next three albums. Sessions took place at Mediasound and Electric Lady in New York and at Crystal Industries in Los Angeles.

Music of My Mind reached No. 6 on Billboard's R&B albums chart and No. 21 on the pop albums chart. "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)" was issued as the first single on April 25, 1972, reaching No. 13 R&B and No. 33 pop, and "Keep On Running" followed in August. In 2020 Rolling Stone placed the album at No. 350 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Two of its songs, "Sweet Little Girl" and "Evil," open and close "Teddy Perkins," an episode of the FX series Atlanta.
