1980 US pressing, MCA Records MCA-6102, cut at Masterdisk by Bob Ludwig
This is Gaucho in its first United States issue, released by MCA Records in 1980 under catalogue number MCA-6102. Every runout documented for this issue carries MASTERDISK and Bob Ludwig's RL initials on both sides, identifying lacquers he cut at Masterdisk.
The object
One stereo LP on MCA's rainbow label: black, with a rainbow arc and clouds above the MCA Records logo. The label variation this copy was identified as prints its side markers in small lowercase, "SIDE a" and "SIDE b", over label matrices MCA 2469 and MCA 2470.
In the deadwax, the documented runout strings run from MD-1 to MD-2 lacquers and include a circled EDP mark, which Discogs credits to Europadisk as the plating house.
MCA packaged the LP with a printed cardstock inner sleeve that carries the lyrics. Susanne Walsh is credited with design and art direction, and the photography is credited to René Burri for Magnum.
Context
Pressing year and album year are both 1980; this copy belongs to the original MCA run rather than a later catalogue reissue. Gary Katz produced, Elliot Scheiner mixed, and Roger Nichols is credited as executive engineer, with sessions logged at Soundworks, A&R Studios, Automated Sound Studios and The Village Recorder.
The album
The background to Gaucho as a work sits on its album page; what this listing documents is MCA-6102 as a physical record.
