Verve Essential Vinyl Series Black Vinyl LP

This is the Verve Essential Vinyl Series edition of Getz/Gilberto, catalog number 6100475: a single black LP with the album's eight tracks cut four to a side. Verve presents the series as a run of core titles from its catalog, issued in their original artwork with an emphasis on sound quality at an accessible price. The jacket carries "Alla Africa", the acrylic painting by Puerto Rican abstract expressionist Olga Albizu that fronted the 1964 original.

The sessions ran on March 18 and 19, 1963, at A & R Recording Studios in New York City, with Creed Taylor producing and the studio's owner, Phil Ramone, engineering. Antônio Carlos Jobim, who wrote or co-wrote six of the eight songs, played piano alongside Sebastião Neto on bass and Milton Banana on drums. Neto went uncredited because another label had hired him, and reissues have long named Getz's regular bassist, Tommy Williams, who did not play on the date. Astrud Gilberto, who had never sung professionally, is featured on "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado". Taylor held the finished record back for nearly a year out of concern it might fail commercially, and Verve released it in March 1964.

At the 1965 Grammy Awards it won Album of the Year, the first album from outside the United States to do so, along with Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical; "The Girl from Ipanema" took Record of the Year. It has sold more than a million copies and entered the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. "Doralice" and "Para Machucar Meu Coração" are the two older sambas in the set, and the only songs Jobim had no hand in writing.
