Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 180 Gram Vinyl LP in Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

This pressing belongs to the Verve / Acoustic Sounds Series, Verve's line of all-analog 180-gram reissues drawn from the Verve and Impulse! catalogs. For the series, Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound masters each title from the original analog tapes, and Quality Record Pressings in Kansas presses the vinyl. The record comes in a gatefold, old-style tip-on jacket printed by Stoughton Printing. The front cover carries the original stereo catalog number, V6-8494.

Creed Taylor produced the original sessions at CBS's 30th Street Studio in New York on August 27 and 28, 1962, with Gary McFarland arranging and conducting. It was Getz's second bossa nova album for Verve, after Jazz Samba with guitarist Charlie Byrd. McFarland passed over the standard big band lineup of eight brass and five saxophones. He used a smaller group instead: four woodwinds and French horn with three trumpets and two trombones, plus two percussionists added to a four-piece rhythm section. Jim Hall, Hank Jones, Doc Severinsen and Bob Brookmeyer each take short solos.

The program is split evenly. Four songs come from Brazilian writers: Luiz Bonfa, Antonio Carlos Jobim with Vinicius de Moraes and with Newton Mendonca, and Joao Gilberto. The other four are McFarland originals. On release the album climbed to No. 13 on Billboard's Top LP chart and stayed there for 23 weeks. Don DeMichael gave it five stars in the December 6, 1962 issue of DownBeat. Four tracks sit on each side, about 33 and a half minutes in all.
