180-Gram Mono LP, Kevin Gray Lacquers, Stoughton Tip-On Jacket
This Prestige reissue of Saxophone Colossus, released on July 28, 2017, is a 180-gram mono pressing. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original master tapes, Quality Record Pressings pressed the disc, and it comes in a Stoughton tip-on jacket with a high-gloss cover.
Sonny Rollins made the album in a single day, June 22, 1956, at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, with Rudy Van Gelder engineering and Bob Weinstock producing. Tommy Flanagan played piano, Doug Watkins bass and Max Roach drums, and most of the songs were done in one take.
The program is three Rollins originals, "St. Thomas," "Strode Rode" and "Blue 7," plus "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "Moritat," better known as "Mack The Knife." The Library of Congress added Saxophone Colossus to the National Recording Registry in 2016.
