Blue Note Tone Poet Series 180g Black Vinyl LP in a Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

This pressing comes from Blue Note's Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series, which Joe Harley produces. Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio mastered it all-analog from the original master tapes and cut the lacquers. Record Technology Incorporated (RTI) in Camarillo, California pressed it on 180-gram vinyl. It plays in stereo, and the jacket carries the stereo catalog number 84032. The jacket is a Stoughton Printing "Old Style" gatefold tip-on.

Blue Note president Don Was launched the series in 2019. He started it because he admired the audiophile Blue Note LPs Music Matters had issued, and he brought Harley over from Music Matters to run it. The name comes from Charles Lloyd, who first called Harley the "Tone Poet." Out Of The Blue was on the series' 2021-2022 line-up and was released on April 1, 2022.

Sonny Red, a Detroit-born alto saxophonist, made only one album as a leader for Blue Note, and this is it. Blue Note's own notes call it a gem of the catalog. The album mixes his own tunes with lesser-known standards, recorded at two quartet sessions at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Six of the eight tracks come from December 5, 1959, with Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Roy Brooks on drums. The Lope and Stairway to the Stars come from January 23, 1960. Kelly returned for that date with Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, who were Miles Davis's rhythm section at the time.

Alfred Lion produced the sessions and Rudy Van Gelder engineered them. Reid Miles designed the cover, Francis Wolff took the photographs and Ira Gitler wrote the liner notes. Bluesville and Stay As Sweet As You Are were also issued together on a Blue Note 45. In his AllMusic review, Scott Yanow rated the album "Recommended."
