Blue Note Tone Poet Series 2LP, 180g Black Vinyl, Tip-On Gatefold With Booklet

This is the Tone Poet edition of The Art Of The Trio, a stereo set on two 180-gram LPs pressed at Record Technology Inc. (RTI). Joe Harley produced it, and Kevin Gray mastered it AAA at Cohearent Audio, working from the original analog master tapes. The tip-on gatefold jacket holds a booklet with new liner notes by Syd Schwartz, the original notes by Ben Sidran and Bob Porter, and Francis Wolff photographs that Blue Note describes as never seen before.

The music comes from piano trio dates Clark recorded for Blue Note that stayed entirely on standards. His October 1957 session with bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones became the album Sonny Clark Trio, issued in the spring of 1958. He went back to Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio twice later in 1958: in November with bassist Jymie Merritt and drummer Wes Landers, and in December with Chambers and Landers. That later material, together with alternate takes from the 1957 date, first appeared only in Japan, as Blues In The Night in 1979 and The Art Of The Trio in 1980.

Blue Note says this is the first time those recordings have shared a single vinyl package. The first LP carries the eight tracks of Blues In The Night, and the second reproduces the nine-track running order of the 1980 The Art Of The Trio, opening with the three 1957 alternate takes. Harley has said he first found these recordings on Japanese-only editions in the 1970s and kept returning to them.

Clark joined Blue Note in 1957 after moving to New York, and his own compositions appear on the label's Dial 'S' For Sonny, Sonny's Crib and Cool Struttin'. The Tone Poet series grew out of Blue Note president Don Was's regard for the Music Matters audiophile reissues. Was brought in Harley, known as the "Tone Poet," to oversee it.
