Chess 75 Series 180 Gram Mono LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This edition of The Real Folk Blues belongs to the Chess 75 Series, the Chess Records 75th anniversary reissue line. It is cut from the original analog tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, whose TML-M mark sits in the runout of both sides, and pressed in mono on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings. The jacket is a tip-on gatefold printed on heavy board that reproduces the 1966 sleeve, Don S. Bronstein's cover art and Willie Dixon's original liner notes included.

Chess first issued the album in January 1966 as LP-1503, the third title in its Real Folk Blues series after volumes by Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Williamson had died the previous spring, and the record gathers Chicago sessions cut between 1957 and 1964, produced for the album by Marshall Chess and made up mostly of material that had never been released.

The twelve songs come from the decade Williamson spent recording for the Chess subsidiary Checker, roughly seventy sides in all. "One Way Out," recorded in September 1961 with Otis Spann on piano, Robert Lockwood and Luther Tucker on guitars, Willie Dixon on bass and Fred Below on drums, had appeared on a Checker single in January 1962 and was later taken up by the Allman Brothers Band. "Checkin' Up on My Baby," from an April 1960 session, was never a single and has since become one of the most recorded songs he wrote. Dixon's "Bring It On Home," cut in January 1963 with Matt "Guitar" Murphy on guitar, waited until 1966 for release; Led Zeppelin adapted it three years later.
